HI KKP- Cyber Sexual Harassment In Chinese Context

TYPE: ILLUSTRATION / TYPOGRAPHY / MOTION GRAPHIC
TOPIC: CYBER SEXUAL HARASSMENT
DATE: 08/2019
“Hi KKP” is an internet buzzword, meaning “Hi there, show me your vagina?”.This phrase pattern was derived from a sentence said by a famous online game broadcaster, Xiaochuan Sun.

“Hi KKP” represents a type of network language with strong sexual purposes in China. Other examples are “Are you there?”, “Are you looking for some?”, and “Is there a place?”. They can only be understood in Chinese network language context because they are created using metaphors and spread cross different social media sites such as chat software.

Many people think it is a funny and cool pick-up line, and keep spreading this phrase on the internet. Many Chinese think it is funny and keep spreading it, but few people realize that it is a form of sexual harassment that can cause serious damages to others.

The visual experiment: Genital photos, second selfie?
*A visual experiment was conducted in a class of 59 people, including teachers and students.

On social media, there are more and more information exchanges with purpose, including language like “Hi KKP”, and genital photos as the greeting line to strangers. Genital photos have become the second sele of some people. I conducted an experiment in a class, showing the composite photo on the right to the teachers and students, so that they could experience of being sexual harassed online, and then they were asked to report their feelings about the experiments.

The inspiration & explaniation of this design project:

Xiaochuan Sun
Famous Chinese online game broadcaster

In China, live broadcasts play an increasingly important role on the internet, which leads to more and more problems.

Hi KKP means “Hi there, show me your vagina?” This phrase pattern was derived from a sentence said by a famous online game broadcaster, Xiaochuan Sun. Many people think it is a funny and cool pick-up line, and keep spreading this phrase on the internet.

Most importantly, this type of network language is a form of sexual harassment, which has negative impact on the recipient psychologically and physiologically. Although it may seem trivial to one individual, it can be massive and extensive cross the whole internet. Therefore, network sexual harassment should not be ignored. “Hi KKP” represents a type of network language with strong sexual purposes in China. Other examples are “Are you there?”, “Are you looking for some?”, and “Is there a place?”. They can only be understood in Chinese
